I build dependable software for people whose work depends on complex data. My experience spans the full life of a system: understanding users’ needs, designing interfaces, shipping code, and operating it.

At the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, I architected an AWS lakehouse supporting more than 200 researchers and over 10 PB of data, and helped implement a migration that reduced aggregate data platform costs by 75%. I also built a Spark Structured Streaming framework on Apache Iceberg that cut update latency from roughly a day to seconds. Improved schema handling and automatic schema evolution reduced pipeline failures by 80%. Those projects required balancing performance and cost with the reliability researchers needed in their daily work.

My open-source work reflects the same priorities. I independently built and maintain [Jobman](https://github.com/ryancswallace/jobman), a Go job execution platform used at the Federal Reserve, with durable state, retries, dependencies, and concurrency controls. Its shared control plane adds PostgreSQL-backed coordination, idempotent submissions, and authenticated agent connections. I also built [benchmatrix](https://github.com/ryancswallace/benchmatrix) to make performance regressions testable through repeated measurements and statistical comparisons. Across these projects, I focus on clear interfaces, explicit failure recovery, and tests that give maintainers useful evidence.

As a lead data scientist, I mentored two colleagues, ran design reviews, and directed maintenance and incident response.
